The Sermon on the Mount
The following chapters of Matthew are some of the most interesting, compelling and powerful chapters in the Gospels, we are going be to unpacking, exploring and explaining many of his doctrine and teachings over the next few chapters and I hope that both me writing and you reading will get more and more teaching every time we return to these pages.
The Sermon on the Mount is a huge moment in the Gospel story, it is the foundation of Yahusha's ministry, it is the cornerstone of the Truth and Good news, and we are going to show you, to the best of our knowledge and ability, what is being preached to the masses by Ha'Mashiach.
So much so that we are going to need two pages to fit it all in, so this page is solely for chapter 5, and the subsequent page will be for chapters 6-7.
Lets get into it!
Matthew Chapter 5
v1, "And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his Talmidiym (disciples) came unto him..."
Right away I want to draw your attention to 2 things, firstly, Yahusha when he sees the crowds and multitude following him from Galiyl, Decapolis, Yerushaliym and Yahud, goes up into the mountains. He leaves the masses and waits for his Talmidiym, his disciples, his students to follow him up there. So not inly is he setting himself apart from the masses, but he is also seeing who will follow him up, who wants to seek for him, and work a little to get his teachings.
Seek and ye shall find...
Anyway lets get into the blessings;
Matthew ch3-12, lets read it all and then go back over it;
"Blessed are the poor in ruach, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see Elohiym.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."
Okay.
To begin I want to draw out several notes from the blessings before we look at psalm 37 which I believe Yahusha is drawing many of this teaching from.
So blessed are; the poor, they that mourn, the meek, they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, and they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake.
So two things jump out at me, one is righteousness is mentioned twice in two seperate blessings, and the other main theme is purity, love and compassion.
Righteousness is linked heavily to Torah, to the commandments and judgements laid down by Yahuah through Mosheh at Mount Horeb and Ciyani.
For example, Psalm 119 v142, "Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness and your Torah is the Truth."
Psalm 15 "Yahuah, who shall abide in your Tabernacle? Who shall dwell in your holy hill? He that walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the Truth."
Psalm 23 ""He restores my soul: he leads me in the cycles of righteousness for his name's sake."
And countless other mentions.
And as for the love, humility and righteous themes, think of the words written by the Prophey Miykah, ch6 v8 "He has showed ou, O man, what is Good and what Yahuah requires of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly after your Elohiym."
Now lets look at Psalm 37 and see the blessings here in bold;
"Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in Yahuah, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thyself also in Yahuah: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto Yahuah; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. 6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. 7 Rest in Yahuah, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon Yahuah, they shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. 12 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. 13 Yahuah shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. 14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. 15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. 16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but Yahuah upholdeth the righteous. 18 Yahuah knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. 20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of Yahuah shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. 21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. 22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by Yahuah: and he delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for Yahuah upholdeth him with his hand. 25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. 27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. 28 For Yahuah loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. 30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. 31 The Torah of his Elohiym is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. 32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. 33 Yahuah will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. 34 Wait on Yahuah, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it. 35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. 36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. 37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. 38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. 39 But the salvation of the righteous is of Yahuah: he is their strength in the time of trouble. 40 And Yahuah shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him."
The blessings of Yahusha are found endlessly in scriptures, from Genesis and Deuteronomy to the Prophets, Psalms, Proverbs and the Gospels. They are a great way to focus on wha we should be doing.
At all times follwing in the paths of righteousness for the sake of his name, showing mercy, and meekness, guarding the Torah and Truth, working to purify our hearts and enduring persecution for his sake. You will see this theme everywhere in your Bible.
Salt and Light of the Earth
Lets continue onto verses 13-15.
"Ye are the salt of the Earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is henceforth good for nothing , but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the World. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle , and put it under a bushel, but on a menorah; and it gives light unto all that are in the house. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Beginning with the salt.
We give the earth its savour, but if we lose that which we are good for, the part of us that is pleasing, then what are we good for? Nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot.
Well what is good and pleasing in the sight of Yahuah, how can we please the Father and show him love and praise?
Deuteronomy ch6 v4. The Shema, "Shema Yashar'el Yahuah Elohaynu, Yahuah Yachad." in English, "Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God, The Lord is one. And you shall love The Lord with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might."
1st John ch5 v2-4 "By this we know that we love the children of Elohiym (God), when we love Elohiym and guard his commandments. For this is the Love of Elohiym, that we guard his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous."
John ch15 v10 "If ye guard my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have guarded my Father's commandments, and abide in his love." v13, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you."
John ch14 v15, "If you love me guard my commandments."
Time and again we see Yahuah speak to Yashar'el and say, they will be cast out becasue they have forsakne Yahuah and his Torah and gone after other Elohiym. And just like them, when we sin against him and his Torah we are cast out having lost our saltiness.
As for the light of the World -
Lets look at some Proverbs; ch4 v18-19
ch4 v18-19 "But the Path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble."
ch6 v23 "For the commandment is a lamp; and the Torah is light; and reproofs of instrution are the way of life."
Psalm 119 v105 "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
If we are the light of the world then we are the living embodiment of his rightrousness and his Torah, not only because we are commanded to walk out his Torah and guard his commandments, but alos because when we do this we receive the comforter, the Ruach Ha'Qodesh and this is Yahusha living inside us, shining out of us, as it says in the gospel of John:
John ch3 v16-21 "For Elohiym so loved the world, that he gave his beloved son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For Elohiym sent not his beloved son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that belives on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the belived son of Elohiym. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone that does evil hates the light, nether comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that does Truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in Elohiym."
John ch12 v44-46 Yahusha is speaking - "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believes on me should not abide in darkness."
John ch15 v4 "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine..." And in v10 he tell us how to, "If ye guard my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have guarded my Father's commandments, and abide in his love."
So here again just like in Matthew ch5 Yahusha is telling us to walk in Torah, gurad the commandments and he will abide in us.
Why should we guard Torah, other than for all the reasons mentioned above?
Yahusha told us at the end of this paragraph in Matthew ch5 v15 "that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven"
It is all about being an example for others, and to glorify the Father. We have to be meek, humble and obedient to him, giving him the glory and praise, not being self righteous but fearing Elohiym and serving him with sincerity and Truth.
In meekness and quietness he will gather us, and through our obedience and courage we will show him our faith and love.
Be the light, be the salt, keep your flavour and zeal, and guard the Torah of our Elohiym, shining out his glory, righteousness and mercy.
Yahusha and Torah
Matthew ch5 v17-20
"Think not that I have come to destroy the Torah, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfil. For amein I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one yod or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Torah, til all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Parashiym, ye shall in no wise enter into the Kingdom of Heaven."
Wow.
I mean how can anyone say that Yahusha came to remove the Law, the Torah, and teaches us to break it...
He just said "Think not that I have come to destroy the Torah, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfil."
and "Till heaven and earth pass, one yod or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Torah" Heaven and Earth have not passed as far as I was aware...
and "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven" Yet why are we taught that the LAw was done away with and we don't have to keep Shabbat, or that we can now eat unclean things, or its okay to be Gay, or have an abortion, or ignore the feasts and on and on...
"except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Parashiym, ye shall in no wise enter into the Kingdom of Heaven." We have to actually live out the Torah and commandments, not for our own glory, but for his, and not to seem righteous to others but to be humble, merciful and just as our Father in Heaven commands.
Consider some other teachings and scriptures;
Proverbs ch3 v1 "My son, foret not my Torah; but let your heart guard my commandments."
Proverbs ch4 v1-2 "Hear ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my Torah."
Psalm 1 (all) " Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the Torah of Yahuah; and in his Torah he meditates day and night. ANd he shall be as a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he does shall prosper.
The wicked are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For Yahuah knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the wicked shall perish."
Or in the Torah books themsleves;
Deuteronomy ch27 v26 "Cursed be he that confirms not all the words of this Torah to do them. And all the people shall say, Amein."
Deuteronomy ch12 v32 "Whatsoever I command you, guard to do it: you shall not add thereto, nor diminish from it."
I can hear him speaking out that second Deuteronomy quote when he says, "For amein I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one yod or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Torah, til all be fulfilled." He is confirming the commandment to not addto, nor diminish from the Torah. Telling us that not the smallest letter the yod, not the smallest tittle, will be removed until heaven and earth pass away.
Truely Ha'Mashiach did not come to remove Torah, but to teach it, walk it, live it and reveal it to us, showing us how to live to please the Father and show him that we truely do love him with all our heart and all our soul and all our might.
If you still are not sure, consider 1st John ch3 v4-8 "Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the Torah, for sin is transgression of the Torah. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. Whosoever abides in him sins not: whosoever sins has not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive yo: he that does righteousness is righteous even as he is righteous. He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning."
Anyone therefore who sins willingly is of the Devil. And has never seen nor known Yahuah and Yahusha Ha'Mashiach. For those who abide in and love Ha'Mashiach sin not. Meaning as John just told us, they do not trangress, break, Torah...
Yahusha Ha'Mashiach dies to clean you from your sin and redeem you to the Father, do not go back to sin after this, hoping that his grace might abound more towards you.
Is his blood worth so little to you that you need to spill more and more to clean your willful sin daily? Or will you show him how much you love him, by, as it says in John ch14 v15 "If ye love me, guard my commandments."
What is that famous line from John? Go and sin no more... Go and don't break Torah anymore.
Now with the final link to Matthew ch5, lets look at v17
"Think not that I have come to destroy the Torah, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy but to fulfil."
Now we have already established that he fulfilled it all by never commiting sin, but there is a promise in Deuteronomy that he is also fulfilling that we should read here;
Deuteronomy ch18 v15-19 "Yahuah ELohayka will raise up a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethern, like unto me; unto him, ye shall hearken; According to all that you desired of Yahuah ELohayka in Chorev in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of Yahuah Elohai, neither let me see this great fire anymore, that I die not. And Yahuah said unto me, They have spoken well that which they have spoken. I will raise them up a Prophet from amoung their brethern, like unto you, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto thm all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him."
Is not Yahusha this Prophet? Is he not speaking nothing but what the Father commands him, and doing nothing but hwat he sees his Father doing? He is the fulfillment of so much Torah prophecy and symbolism, and he is Ha'Mashiach!
Ye have heard it said...
Having established that he is not against the Torah, but rather is come to fulfil it lets look at what he said regarding some of the commandments;
Matthew ch5 v21-22 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgement: But I say to you, That whosoever is angry with his Brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgement..."
Yahusha begins with the 6th commandment, Thou shall not kill.
And shows us the deeper Torah meaning to this, explaining that it is not just murder, but feeling murderous, hatered without a just cause, that is just as dangerous to us.
This is seen time and again in scripture, two easy examples being Cain and Abel and King Shaul when he hates David, both from jealousy.
And what does Yahuah tell Cain? Genesis ch4 v7 "If you do well, shall you not be accepted? And if you do not well, sin lies at the door."
And remember that 1st Samuel ch16 v7 "Yahuah sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, But Yahuah looks on the heart."
As we will see throughout the rest of these you have heard it said scenarios, that the heart is a big issue in Yahusha's ministry.
-
Matthew ch5 v27-28 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall not break wedlock: But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has broken wedlock with her already in his heart."
Again we see the deeper side to this lust, it is not just the act of adultery, but the desire, the lusting after it that is the sin.
Yahusha tells us also here that "Whosoever shall put away his woman, saving for fornication, causes her to break wedlock: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced breaks wedlock."
So clearly Yahusha and the Torah are against divorce, unless the woman is commiting fornication, else both her new husband and the woman would be adulterers in the eyes of Yahuah.
-
Matthew ch5 v33-37 "Again, ye have heard that it has been said by them of old time, You shall not forswear yourself, but shall perform unto Yah your oaths; But I say unto you, Swear not falsely; neither by heaven; for it is Elohiym's throne, nor by earth for it is his footstool: neither by Yerushalaiym; for it is the city of the great king, Neither shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your communication be Yea, yea, Nay, nay: fo whatsoever is more than these comes of evil."
Yahusha is getting at several ideas at once, first he says do not swear falsely, or inother words do not lie, and do not bear false witness, so he is confirming Torah.
Secondly he is teaching us not to swear by anything, but simply to honour our words, to let our yes mean yes, and our no mean no.
He is teaching us not to be double minded, and not to lie. Furthermore he is showing us again that this is a heart issue, our word should be enough, we should be trust worthy and honorable enough in our actions and words because we obey his commandments, and thus we need not swear because we will do what we say, honouring our word.
Also I cant help but think of countless times in the Word that someone swears by Yah or Heaven and then it does not work out well for them, one I have read recently;
Judges ch11 v30-31 and v34 "And Yiphtach vowed a vow unto Yahuah, and said, If yhou shall without fail deliver the children of Ammon into my hands, Then it shall be, that whatsoever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be Yahuah's and I will offer it up for an ascending smoke offering...And Yiphtach came to Mitspah unto his house and , behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his beloved child; beside which he had neither son nor daughter."
-
Matthew ch5 v38-42 "ye have heard that it has been said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue you at judgement, and take your coat, let him have your cloak also. And whosoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two. Give to him that asks of you, and from him that would borrow turn not away."
There is a lot to say on this verse, so lets start with the basics. Resist not evil, but turn the other cheek. This is patience, love, mercy and peace. Remember the blessing at the start of ch5? Blessed are the meek, merciful, pure, peacemakers, and those that are persecuted for righteousness sake. Endure, and overcome the persecution and abuse, don't escalate or return it.
Now, this is all to do with assault, verbal or physical, and persecution against you. This is not about self defence, nor is it about protecting the tribe, your family, or your faith. You are bold and strong and defend from evil all that is good, but in the matter of someone hitting you in anger, or verbally abusing you, you turn the other cheek. You speak the truth, not slander.
For example when the Parashiym accuse Yahusha of being a bastard, he ignores it and focuses on the topic they are debating, he doesn't return insults.
John ch8 v19 "Where is your father?" Yahusha answered, Ye know neither me nor my Father: If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also."
And later in John ch8 v41-42 "Then said they unto him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even Elohiym. Yahusha said unto them, If Elohiym was your Father, ye woul dlove me: for I proceeded forth and came from Elohiym."
He just sticks to the topic, he doesn't get flustered or snap back insults, but speaks the truth.
And as we will look at later, he will teach us to love our enemies and our neighbours, so we must love them, not abuse them too.
Similarly he tells us to "Give to him that asks of you, and from him that would borrow turn not away." Do not be attached to your possessions, but give and share and have it all as the blessing of Elohiym, not your things. Save those things which are not to be shared, such as your spouse. But as far as food, tools, clothing, money, worldly stuff, what does it benefit if you gain it all, but lose your pure heart and soul?
Now there is a deeper level to the eye for an eye also and we can find it by seeking the Torah verses where we see this annotation.
Lets look at some, because it is easy to see that not in every case is it an eye for an eye, but only in a few very specific instances, and even then there is underlying clauses.
Exodus ch21 v22-27 is a great example of this,
"If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischeif follow: he shall be surely punished according as the woman's man will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischeif folow, then you shall give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, BUrning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sak. And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake."
So you can see here, that only in the instance that a man hurts a pregnant woman and she miscarries, or the child is born deformed is the punishment life for life, eye for an eye, tooth for tooth and so on. BEvause this was a totally innocent child, who is born scared or killed because of their actions and it shall be repaid. But when he smites out his servants tooth, he is not himself hit until he loses a tooth, but he must let his servant go because of his injury.
Yahusha is teaching us that the eye for an eye, is not a principle, we don;t just stir up strife and form feuds between households because he insulted me or hit me or what ever, but that just as Elohiym regards not persons neither should we. We do not consider ourselves higher than that and we do not withhold justice either, but we love Yahuah and keep his commandments, including as we are about to get into, love your nieghbour as yourself.
-
Matthew ch5 v43-48 "Ye have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in Heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethern only, what do ye do more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
I want to spend some time here, and we are going to break this down into 2 parts, first the love your neighbour part, and then the be perfect part.
Lets look at love first.
Yahusha is quoting from Leviticus ch19 v17-18 "You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall in any wise rebuke your neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudgeagainst the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am Yahuah."
Okay, lets break this down,
You shall not hate your brother in your heart
Just like he already told us earlier with you shall not kill, we wont hate in our hearts without just cause. But we shall "in any wise rebuke your neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him" So we will not hate him when he sins, but we shall rebuke him for it and not suffer sin in the camp, or on our brothers and sisters. This goes for all sin, unless the sin is puniched by death in which the sinner in question must die. But again we do not hate, but we act justly and obey the commandments of Yahuah. His judgement, not ours, his righteous judgement not our fueled by hate and emotion judgement.
Alos it says in v18 "You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people" Notice who our neighbours are in both instances, the children of our people and our brother. So when he is talking about loving our neighbour, it is our fellow Yashar'eliym, our brothers and sisters in Ha'Mashiach, the children of Yah. Not the pagans, nor sinners, nor satanists of the world, this does not apply to them, we are set appart from them, and are to have no fellowship with their darkness and are commanded to not learn their ways.
So when he says enemies, again this is people within the camp who we may have a rudge against, and as leviticus said, You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people" so you will love your enemy not hate them.
Meekness, humility, mercy, love, forgiveness, long suffering, patience. This is our will towards the children of Yah, not grudges, hatred, vengence and strife.
Rebuke the sin, love the brethern, unless it is a sin against Yah, if they sin against you, forgive them.
FInally lets look at "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
The word Perfect appears a lot in the Bible. Lets look at some other examples of this for context;
Noach - Genesis ch6 v9 "Noach was a just man, and perfect in his generations, and Noach walked with Elohiym."
Avraham -Genesis ch17 v1-2 "Yahuah apeared unto EL-Avram and said unto him, I am El Shaddai (God Almighty); walk before me and be perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."
1st kings ch8 v61 - "Let your heart therefore be perfect with Yahuah ELohaynu, to walk in his statutes, and to guard his commandments, as at this day."
Proverbs ch2 v21 "For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it."
Psalm 19 v7 "The Torah of Yahuah is Perfect, restoring the soul: the testimony of Yahuah is sure, making wise the simple."
Psalm 101 - "I will sing of mercy and judgement: unto you, O Yahuah, will I sing. I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when will you come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. I will set no wicked thing before my eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart from me; I will not know a wicked person. Whoso privily slanders his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that has a high lookand a proud heart will I not suffer. My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walks perfect in the way, he shall serve me. He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that tells lies shall nto tarry in my sight, I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of Yahuah."
Very often, Perfect, is likned to guarding the commandments, walking in his ways, his paths, it is freindship with Elohiym. A perfect heart is what he is seeking and Yahusha has spent the last while explaining the heart side of the commandments.
And what was foretolf by the Prophets and Mosheh in the Torah?
Circumcisiuon of the heart.
Its all about the heart.
As we said earlier from 1st Samuel ch16 v7 "Yahuah sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, But Yahuah looks on the heart."
Deuteronomy ch30 v6 "And Yahuah Elohayka will circumcise your heart, and the heart of your seed, to love Yahuah ELohayka with all your heart, and with all your soul that you may live."
Jeremiah ch31 v33 "But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Yashar'el; After those days, saith Yahuah, I will put my Torah in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their Elohiym, and they shall be my people."
Do you see the heart again, circumcise our heart, write the torah in our hearts, Yahuah look son our hearts, do you love him with all your heart?
Yahusha is showing us the Way to the Father, we must be Perfect, as our Father in Heaven is Perfect,
As it is written
Be ye Holy for I am Holy.
